A Double Breakfast Delight On United Airlines

Matthew Klint Posted onSeptember 8, 2019November 14, 2023 8 Comments

Each week, my Meal of the Week feature examines an airline meal from my travels over the years. This may be a meal from earlier in the week or it may be a meal served over a decade ago.

Why have one breakfast when you can have two? I had quite the hearty breakfast on my last international United flight.

Last week I traveled from Frankfurt to Chicago on United in business class on UA945, a flight that departs at 8:35AM. The flight was less than half full in business class…something I’ve never seen before on United.

It was nice to be able to spread out and I’m sure the flight attendants appreciated the lighter workload. With the early departure, breakfast was served after takeoff. Choices included a cheddar cheese omelet, steak and eggs, strawberry-stuffed pancakes, and a cold German breakfast plate with meat, cheese, and a hard-boiled egg.

Service began with mixed nuts and a choice of beverage, just like any other United Airlines intercontinental flight.

The appetizer included cold oatmeal and sliced citrus fruits, with choice of bread, though no croissants or cinnamon rolls were offered. I had a pretzel roll.

Main Course #1

For my main course, I decided to try the steak and eggs. It has been a long time since I’ve seen beef tenderloin on United (versus beef short ribs) and the scrambled eggs, hollandaise sauce, asparagus, cooked tomatoes, and potatoes gratin sounded like a tasty combo.

And while the steak was predictably overcooked, everything else in the casserole dish was quite tasty.

On these breakfast flights, the standard cheese and/or ice cream sundae is offered for dessert. I wasn’t in the mood for it, so I made a special request.

Noting the many open seats, I asked the purser if they had over-catered the flight. He was a bit confused, but I explained that I’d love to have some strawberry pancakes for dessert, but only if there were enough meals for all the crew.

Turns out there were plenty of extra meals loaded and my request was happily obliged. In fact, I think the crew really got a kick out of my request and was happy the food was not going to waste. Before serving me the pancakes, I was asked if I wanted whipped cream and strawberries on top from the sundae cart.

Sure, why not?

The pancakes arrived with maple syrup and I greatly enjoyed the second breakfast…or dessert.

My only regret is that I should have asked them to put vanilla ice cream over the pancakes. That would have been an even more decadent treat.

CONCLUSION

One breakfast was nice enough, but I enjoyed my second one more than my first one. Thanks to a great Chicago-based United crew for a wonderful flight and a second breakfast.

Matthew, while there’s a benefit to having a light touch when moderating comments, surely sophomoric, racist garbage such as the comment above from “Bob” needn’t be tolerated.

    I mean, come on.

Unless it is profanity, I tend to let people hang themselves. Paolo is a good sport – I rather think he finds such comments amusing.
