United Airlines is expanding its premium-heavy Boeing 787-9 with the new Elevated interior beyond San Francisco, adding four long-haul routes from Houston later this year and early next year.
United Expands Elevated 787-9 To Four Houston Routes
United Airlines will begin flying its new Boeing 787-9 with the Elevated interior from Houston later this year, marking the first sustained deployment of the aircraft outside San Francisco.
According to an update United shared with Live And Let’s Fly, the aircraft will begin appearing on three routes from George Bush Intercontinental Airport on October 24, 2026:
- Houston (IAH) – São Paulo (GRU), effective October 24
- Houston (IAH) – Tokyo Narita (NRT), effective October 24
- Houston (IAH) – Sydney (SYD), effective October 24
A fourth route will follow after the new year:
- Houston (IAH) – London Heathrow (LHR), effective January 5, 2027
The Sydney route is an especially logical choice considering its extreme length. United’s nonstop flight between Houston and Sydney can exceed 17 hours, making the improved seating, larger screens, and expanded premium cabins particularly valuable.

With the Houston additions, United’s scheduled Elevated 787-9 network will include:
- San Francisco (SFO) – London Heathrow (LHR)
- San Francisco (SFO) – Singapore (SIN)
- San Francisco (SFO) – Zurich (ZRH)
- Houston (IAH) – São Paulo (GRU)
- Houston (IAH) – Tokyo Narita (NRT)
- Houston (IAH) – Sydney (SYD)
- Houston (IAH) – London Heathrow (LHR)
United has been gradually adding the aircraft to more San Francisco frequencies as additional 787-9s arrive. By September, the Elevated cabin is scheduled across United’s daily San Francisco service to London, Singapore, and Zurich. As always, aircraft assignments remain subject to change.

United’s new 787-9 contains only 222 seats, including:
- 8 Polaris Studio suites
- 56 standard Polaris suites
- 35 Premium Plus seats
- 39 Economy Plus seats
- 84 standard economy seats
That adds up to 99 seats in Polaris and Premium Plus alone, making this United’s most premium-heavy aircraft (and no, unlike Delta I don’t count Economy Plus a s premium seat).
Polaris Studio offers larger front-row suites with privacy doors, 27-inch OLED screens, enhanced bedding, pajamas, upgraded dining, and space for a companion in six of the eight suites. Standard Polaris seats also gain doors and larger screens, while every cabin receives upgraded displays and Bluetooth connectivity.

CONCLUSION
United’s Elevated 787-9 will expand to Houston beginning October 24, serving São Paulo, Tokyo Narita, and Sydney before joining the Houston–London route on January 5.
The expansion is an encouraging sign that the new aircraft will not remain confined to only a handful of flagship routes from San Francisco. Now how about some love from Los Angeles, United? 😉
