Kruise Klux Klan: Cruise Ship Staff Dress Up As “Upside Down Snow Cones”

Cruise ship staff donned white hoods and marched around a cruise ship in solidarity…in a shocking display of…ignorance? One Australian cruise company is trying to pass off homemade KKK costumes as innocent “upside down snow cones” but I’m not sure.

Staff Dressed In White Hoods Dismissed As “Upside Down Snow Cones” On Australian Cruise Ship

Kyle texted me this story yesterday and I set it aside, thinking it could not be real, but yes, sometimes the truth is stranger than fiction. First, take a look:

NEW: Cruise line staff dresses up for a Christmas costume party, cruise line insists they were dressed up as “upside-down snow cones.”

Travelers on a P&O Cruises Australia ship were horrified to see staff walking around with white hoods on.

— Collin Rugg (@CollinRugg) January 22, 2025

The incident occurred on P&O Cruises, an Australian cruise line and part of the Carnival Cruise umbrella. In December 2024, a “Christmas-themed event” took place onboard with staff wearing matching costumes that look like…a Klan rally?

P&O Communications Director Lynne Scrivens tried to explain it away, but only made it worse:

“They’ve got to make do with what they’ve got. And they were wearing their cleaning uniforms, and they’ve put something on their head that looks like a snow cone – an upside-down snow cone.”

ROFTL.

My goodness.

I do think this was innocent…

Though the Ku Klux Klan claims British roots, the white supremacist, far-right hate group that misappropriates Christianity and Protestantism is a US phenomenon.

I’m quite glad that way off in the “Land Down Under,” Australians or whoever works on Australian vessels do not know that white doesn’t mean pure when it comes in the form of a costume like this. Unlike One Mile At A Time, I’m not surprised that not a single staff member who saw this decided to voice concerns. Or maybe they thought it was Easter in Spain?

But this is a learning moment…and this is yet another reason I’m not a fan of costume parties…

Next, you’re going to tell me that Elon was just stretching! 😉

I know lefties like you like to project your historical revisionism in others but remember the KKK was and always has been a Democrat party creation and the Democrats even had formed KKK members in office up until a few years ago. Our dementia riddden former president praised them on many occasions.

It is “Sieg”, not Sig and means “victory” in German. Sig is the first parft of the Sauer the products which sending the bullets towards illegal intruders and criminals, So, Sig(Sauer) Heil sounds good too 🙂
It usually came as a response “Sieg Heil!” to ” Heil Hitler”!
Same like nowadays ” Slava Ukrainii!” and response ” Geroyam slava!”
Both are patriotic phrases during the war but I would not equal their meaning. The first is pointed towards a person, the latter towards a country.

I read this post on OMAAT yesterday and was shocked on how stupid some people are. Some Americans believe that the world runs around them and everyone is supposed to know everything about their history. If you read the story, these were ship’s cleaners that probably come from countries where they don’t even know their own history so how can you expect they know about KKK in the US and how they dressed. Also, they were wearing their cleaning uniforms so probably thought about putting something on their heads as it was an event where they should be wearing something themed. There are things that are bad in some cultures but super normal in others and I think we should respect both.

Ok, yeah, I’m with you, makes sense, until….”probably come from countries where they don’t even know their own history.” Tie with lucky for moronic take.

@Sam Kim: you completely misinterpreted my comment. These were ship cleaners which usually come from 3rd world countries and are people that unfortunately did not have much opportunity in life. What I meant is that unfortunately they probably did not even have a chance to go to school in their countries to learn about their own history so how could you expect they know about US history?

The KKK haven’t been relevant in decades. For anyone born after 2000, there’s probably a good chance they’ve never even heard of them, let alone know how they dress. So I doubt the KKK was even on their radar when they made the decision to dress like that, especially Australian employees on an Australian based ship.

So, tonight at the bar, I asked a few (under 30) Aussies (I’m in Australia) if they knew what the Ku Klux Klan was. They knew about them and what they wear. They added that wearing such gear was “disgusting.” Thus, I’m left with two possibilities: that crew knew what they did or they weren’t Aussies. I think it is the latter.

  13. Mike Reply
    January 25, 2025 at 4:57 am

Oh, come on… I know enough US history to know what the KKK is, what they stand for, and what they wear. But I’m also originally from Spain, so I don’t immediately think “the Klan’s here!” whenever I see someone wearing a pointy hood (white or otherwise). Unless it happens in the US, which is where the headwear and tunic bear a racist significance, there is no reason to believe a person wearing one such hood sympathises with the KKK’s ideas. The universal transcendence of the costume just isn’t there.

I don’t know. I doubt that anyone who has posted knows for sure..I think this was a misguided and unintended gaff. Many young people are not familiar with the Knights Of The Ku Klux Klan and the terror and hatred they instigated in the United States and other countries. One must remember that many schools in the United States are not teaching the true American history. The schools have taken any “bad things” (my words) out of the curriculum so that they don’t “offend” anyone. Many times the truth hurts and it should hurt. “This is what happened. Don’t let it happen again.” I commend the Jewish people who shout out The Holocaust because it was an “in your face” tragedy of immense proportions. So, I wouldn’t be too harsh on this cruise line. It was (again my opinion) that it was a misguided gaff.

As I posted, Aussie youth (who know a lot about the US) know the KKK and how they dress. I question weather the crew here came from another country.

Years and years ago, I covered a KKKK rally as a photojournalist. I was given permission by the “CMFWIC” (look that one up!) and was given complete freedom to photograph a cross burning. Of course, when I received my very high level security clearance when I went into the USAF, I had to disclose this event. It was a “non event” to the Air Force. However, the photograph shown in this article isn’t even close to the actual dress of the any KKKK that I witnessed. Again, just a misguided staff.
