The new American Express Lounge in Sydney (SYD) is a nice improvement over the older one, with great coffee and a respectable selection of food and drink.

American Express Lounge Sydney Location + Hours

The lounge is open from 6:00AM to 10:00PM each day (though currently closed due to the pandemic).

You’ll find it on Level 1 (arrivals levels) in Terminal 1, near gates 50-63. If you’re in the main departure hall, that means you go downstairs.

American Express Lounge Sydney Access

Access is granted to American Express Platinum and Centurion cardholders worldwide in addition to Explorer, Airpoints, Virgin Australia Velocity, Westpac Altitude, David Jones, and Qantas Corporate or Ultimate cards include access. A compete list of eligible cards is here.

AMEX Lounge Sydney Coffee

My favorite feature of this lounge is the barista bar, with tremendous coffee freshly ground and delicately prepared before your eyes. Australia has such a wonderful coffee culture and the cappuccino could not have been more beautiful or tasty.

American Express Lounge Sydney Food + Drinks

In addition to the coffee, the lounge has a full bar with a section of beer and wine as well as other liquor and spirits. Here’s the full bar menu:

a white box on a marble surface

a sign with blue text on it

a menu of wine with blue text

a menu of a drink

Although probably a temporary promotion, there was a Bombay Sapphire gin station with three “aroma garnishes” (who knew?) on tap.

As for the food, I was there during breakfast time, which included eggs, bacon, sausage, cereal, yogurt, fruit, cheese, bread, and fresh juices.

It appears a cooking station behind glass is utilized later in the day.

American Express Lounge SYD Seating

The lounge was fairly crowded, though not like the U.S. lounges where you often simply cannot find a seat. I had no trouble finding a seat with a power plug. The bar is in the center of the lounge, with a dining area to the left and a fairly spacious corridor leading to a larger seating area to the right.

American Express Lounge Sydney Restrooms + Showers

Restrooms and shower facilities are available. All showers were occupied, so I do not have a picture of a shower suite, but four showers are available.

a bathroom with sinks and mirrors

CONCLUSION

I liked this lounge a lot and understand it is quite an improvement over the old one (3x the size) with the exception of inferior tarmac views. It’s worth a visit during your next swing through Sydney.
