British Midland to Serve Tripoli, Libya

Matthew Klint Posted onOctober 4, 2010 Leave a Comment

When it comes to picking a travel destination, not only am I attracted to places off the beaten path, I am attracted to places prone to violence or relegated to "axis of evil" status. Libya has fascinated me for years and I’ve wanted to visit to "Qadafi Land" to get a sense for what life is like under in an Arab military dictatorship.

Last night, I got this e-mail from bmi:

Dear Matthew,

We’re pleased to announce that from 1 December 2010, we’ll be flying anew daily service between London Heathrow and Tripoli, the capital of Libya. Founded in the 7th century but now a bustling commercial centre, Tripoli offers business and culture combined with a Mediterranean climate. This new daily service will be ideally suited to business travellers and those travelling home to visit friends and family.

All customers will receive complimentary catering and beveragesonboard.

As a special launch offer, we’re offering you double destinations mileson all bmi flights to and from Tripoli until 31 January 2011.

My understanding is that it is very difficult for Americans to get visas to visit Tripoli, but I’m going to look into it. With Ethiopian Airlines joining Star Alliance, I’d like to do a business class redemption to Africa flying the following routing:

LAX-LHR on Air New Zealand

LHR-MJI on British Midland (<24 hours in Tripoli)

MJI-CAI on Egypt Air (<24 hours in Cairo)

CAI-ADD on Ethiopian Airlines (stopover in Addis Ababa)

ADD-JNB on Ethiopian Airlines (<24 hours in Johannesburg)

JNB-CPT on South African (destination in Cape Town)

CPT-MUC on South African (quick connection)

MUC-VIE on Lufthansa (<24 hours in Vienna)

VIE-IAD on Austrian Airlines (quick connection)

IAD-LAX on United Airlines
