JetBlue is challenging United Airlines at its fortress hub, with new transcontinental Mint service from Newark.
JetBlue Mint Service Will Challenge United Premium Transcontinental Routes
JetBlue is adding service from Newark Liberty International, with new Mint service to Los Angeles (LAX) San Francisco (SFO) set to begin on July 23, 2020.
The unexpected announcement directly challenges United in its own backyard. Prior to the pandemic, United operated over 70% of flights from Newark. United offers enhanced “Premium Transcontinental” service between Newark and San Francisco/Los Angeles. That included lie-flat beds, premium bedding, any multi-course meals in business class as well as hot meals in economy class and complimentary alcohol in EconomyPlus, United’s additional legroom section of economy class.
JetBlue expects to add three flights per day to Los Angeles and two to San Francisco. These tickets will go on sale tomorrow, June 19, 2020. Expect competitive pricing and matching from United.
Per JetBlue, these routes were “identified as one in which JetBlue’s award-winning service and low fares will benefit travelers as well as support the airline’s cash position.”
Scott Laurence, JetBlue’s head of revenue and planning, said:
“Coronavirus has transformed airline route maps, and as we begin to see small signs of recovery, we continue to be flexible with our network plans to respond to demand trends and generate cash in support of our business. We’ve selected routes where customers are showing some interest in travel again and where our low fares and award-winning experience will be noticed.”
JetBlue will also add service between Newark and Charleston (CHS) and Jacksonville (JAX).
CONCLUSION
I am so excited about this news! Not only will this put downward pressure on prices, but maybe it will force United to up its game. As much as I love United, JetBlue’s premium product is simply better and will be hugely popular among those traveling between New York and Los Angeles. It has been a few years since I reviewed Mint and it is time for another review.

Really!!! If you’ve ever flown Polaris from LAX to MEL or EWR to GVA or on any long haul flight in Polaris you’d never say anything other than UAL isn’t the best. I’ve talked to many travelers that have flown 1st class on Quantis and Emirates and they all say United Airlines’ Polaris is hands down the best. I know I love it!
Don’t get me wrong, I’ve had many good flights on United and enjoy flying it, especially on the 787-10 between LAX and EWR. But JetBlue is better. Better seat, service, food, and wi-fi. Try it…you’ll see what I mean.

Have you been on Polaris in a 787? Quite narrow. The angled seats are mediocre. Frankly the standard reverse herringbone that is ubiquitous across airlines is better than Polaris.
