Lufthansa Group Beefs Up Service To Ljubljana

Matthew Klint Posted onOctober 4, 2019October 4, 2019 5 Comments

In the wake of Adria Airways’ collapse, the Lufthansa Group is stepping in to fill the void.

Starting this month, we will see new service from three members of the Lufthansa Group to four former Adria destinations. These include:

  • Lufthansa will fly 2x/day between Ljubljana and Frankfurt (starting 27 October)
  • Lufthansa will fly 1x/day between Ljubljana and Munich (starting o1 November)
  • SWISS will fly 5x/week between Ljubljana and Zurich (starting on 16 October)
    • Will become daily service on 27 October
  • Brussels will fly 6x/week between Ljubljana and Brussels  (starting on 04 November)
  • Austrian flies 3x/day to Klagenfurt, an Austrian destination only a short distance from Ljubljana

This new service does not totally fill in the void for Adria, but restores connectivity to key Lufthansa Group hubs. Bookings on all new routes are now available.

SWISS Ends Service To Lugano

I last flew Adria a couple months ago on a domestic flight within Switzerland. SWISS had wet leased a pair of Adria-operated Saab 2000 turboprop aircraft for its domestic service between Lugano and Zurich.

With Adria’s collapse, SWISS will no longer service LUG. A new and more efficient train connection is under construction between Zurich and Lugano and air passengers can travel the 45-minute distance to Milan Malpensa for flight trips.

CONCLUSION

It always seemed more likely that Lufthansa would step in to fill the void left by Adria before a new airline was created. The Lufthansa Group’s new services to Ljubljana help to soften the below of Adria’s untimely demise.

Is the ZRH-LUG service gone for good? When I flew it last year in early September, it was operated by an OS Q400.

To me, what’s most notable about this is the 6x weekly flights to BRU. That’s a pretty solid addition for an airline/airport that many view as unimportant to the LH group. I might be wrong, but I’m guessing most of the connections in BRU will be intra EU and not the sub-Saharan African niche often assumed in BRU.

“Austrian flies 3x/day to Klagenfurt, an Austrian destination only a short distance from Ljubljana”

Any reason why they won’t just fly in directly to Ljubljana?

Also, will the Lufthansa group be filling the void for the routes Adria offered from Tirana and Pristina airports to Frankfurt and Munich?

No word on the other Adria routes from Tirana and Pristina. I would assume that Austrian flies to Klagenfurt because it is a domestic route likely subsidized.

While not surprising, it is sad to see the growing list of carriers retiring this superjumbo jet. On Malaysia Airlines, I flew the #A380 once from Kuala Lumpur (KUL) to London (LHR) and had the entire first class cabin to myself (full review on the blog). It was a beautiful flight that I will always remember.
