Ice Cream? Cheesecake? Chocolate Truffles? Daifuku? What is the best dessert on an airline?
I wrote about this delectable sweet treat in my earlier trip report, but never gave it a dedicated post. It deserves one.
On a recent Midlde East Airlines flight from Beirut to Frankfurt, kanafeh was served! If you’ve never tried kanafeh before, you are really missing out. It is a traditional Arab dessert made with layers of cheese and dough, topped in pistachios and drenched in rose water syrup. Best breakfast dessert ever. Served warm, it is the perfect combination of savory and sweet.
This dish goes great with a strong espresso. The side of fruit and plain pita also balanced the powerful taste of the kanafeh.
I love the unique combination of flavors that this sweet treat offers. If you’re thinking this isn’t for you, just trust me and try it if you ever get the chance. You won’t regret it. It is rich, but worth the calories.
And while Middle East Airlines served excellent kanafeh, if you want the best of the best, check out Habibah in Amman. The “home” of kanafeh is so popular you can expect a line no matter what time of day you visit.

Thanks for pointing out the location in Amman! I had read this assuming you had only been introduced to the airline version. I am part Jordanian (as well as part Native American), and this is my favorite dish from home!
Just had this dish at another place in Amman and in Jerusalem. Wow, is it good!
Considering Kanafeh is the best dessert ever, it’s not surprising that it is also the best airline dessert ever.
I am partial to the sea salt caramel chocolate squares on UNITED premium transcontinental flights.
“if you want the best of the best, check out Habibah in Amman.”
Not bad, but I can think of half a dozen places in Lebanon that make it better.
Matthew- you live in LA and never travel to Glendale or Pasadena. Can get this at any Armenian Bakery. I get them and take them to the office
My office is in Glendale and I have lunch at Raffi’s or Shiraz five days a week when I am in town and have been to Sarkis Pastry for Kanefah.
