With an existing war in Ukraine, Russian airspace limitations, and now a second conflict in the Middle East with Israel, global travel disruptions are increasing rapidly.

Iran Retaliates Against Israel

Yesterday, Iran launched an estimated 300 drones and missiles against Israel. Many of the drones were shot down over Syrian airspace by US and UK fighter jets. Israel reported one injury (a young girl) and no casualties with the Iron Dome shooting down most of the Iranian weapons. United States President, Joe Biden, cut short a beach holiday and returned to the White House to review Iran’s attack with the National Security team.

“We have decided to create a new equation, which is that if from now on the Zionist regime attacks our interests, assets, personalities, and citizens, anywhere and at any point we will retaliate against them,” the Commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Hossein Salami told Iranian state TV.
“The Honest Promise operation is a prominent and very clear example of this new equation,” Salami added.” – CNN

Iran cited article 51 with the United Nations as its justification for the attack. Iran was responding to an attack of an Iranian embassy on April 1st in Syria.

“Suspected Israeli warplanes bombed Iran’s embassy in Syria on Monday in a strike that Iran said killed seven of its military advisers, including three senior commanders, marking a major escalation in Israel’s war with its regional adversaries.” – Reuters

Iran called the matter closed at the end of its onslaught though it’s unknown whether the Israeli military will respond. US sources indicated its commitment to Israel’s security. With an ongoing war in Gaza, an Israel-Iran conflict only further strains both Israel and the region. A diplomatic response from regional powers like Egypt calling for restraint was issued.

Middle East Flight Disruptions

Several countries (Jordan, Iraq, and Lebanon) have closed their airspace due to the conflict but have since reopened tentatively.

“Jordan and Lebanon have previously reported large-scale GPS interference over their respective territories with the Jordanian Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC) urging “two neighbouring countries” to cease their doings based on evidence the sources of the jamming were in those countries. Jordan borders Israel and Saudi Arabia as well as Syria and Iraq, both of which are home to various Iranian proxies.” – CH Aviation

Kuwait Airways is avoiding areas of conflict, and due to the closures, airlines that choose to continue to fly through the region, such as Swiss, have added fuel stops to account for unanticipated routings.

At one point, the following closures were in place. Many of these remain for flights from western nations.

israel iran air space closures

Adding To Existing Complications

The ongoing war in Ukraine and sanctions against Russia is making it tough to get from the West to the East. Narrow windows over Armenia and Georgia allow carriers to make their way to Asia. Not all carriers avoided Iraqi and Iranian air space before last week, but now serious circumnavigation will be required to complete flight segments to the east.

The Israel-Iran conflict may end with this salvo, but if not, complications will continue to affect global travel and global trade in a meaningful way.

Conclusion

Israel and its allies might find themselves in a two-front war depending on the next actions between the two parties. With global tensions high, this mustn’t escalate further. The Ukrainian war dragging on and the battle in Gaza only make this action so much more impactful. Without attributing blame or cause, let’s hope this is the end of the conflict.

Occasionally we hear about a rational one who escapes the mob of the insane , examples : Mosab Hassan Yousef , the son of a Hamas leader ; and Ayaan Hirsi Ali , a daughter of Somalia .

This will surely escalate further, the only question is when.
Iran’s Islamic regime doesn’t want to deter Israel from attacking, but to eliminate it. There’s no response that could appease them.

If Israel and western countries reply harshly, escalation would be quick but might somewhat deter Iran in the longer run.
A mild response will yield some quiet months and guarantee more and worse attacks in the future.
    No good options here.

Peace can only come when the Islamic regime (which is hated my the majority of Iranians) falls.

@Uri … +1 . True , but the possible good news is the moron Iranians tend to be their own worst enemy , as do all of Israel’s moron enemies .

Hopefully Israel will now keep it’s eye on the ball , and not become complacent , as it did before October 7 .

Calling them morons underestimates them. They’re fanatic and cruel, determined and patient.
They understand the weaknesses of the west – primarily our aversion of innocent suffering – and play on them.

And yes, they sometimes are their own worst enemies. My personal favorite is when they say all Jews should return to Europe – this pushes Europeans wonderfully towards Zionism.

“Hopefully Israel will now keep it’s eye on the ball , and not become complacent , as it did before October 7”

In terms of what, ethnic cleansing of the Palestinians which was happening even before Oct 7th?

          April 15, 2024 at 3:39 am

In terms of avoiding ethnic cleansing.
Iran, Hamas and their friends are openly trying to have the Middle East free of Jews.
If that’s not ethnic cleansing, what is?

          • Aaron
            April 15, 2024 at 4:04 am

And that is just as bad. But that doesn’t excuse the genocide being committed against the Palestinians now.

Genocide… You keep using that word. I don’t think it means what you think it means.

It’s war. War is hell. Innocents die. Don’t start wars.

Israel was given days advance notice by the US — courtesy of Iran-Turkey relay — that there would be an attack barrage heading there way that wouldn’t pose much more of a threat than Israel has faced in prior months this year and last. It’s like the Iranians want to put on a show of basically meaningless force so as to respond to Israel’s attack on an Iranian government building without provoking an escalation with more direct confrontation. At some point if things continue as is, someone is going to miscalculate and then yet another awful escalation will follow. Unlike Iran, Israel has the nuclear weapons capability to get through Iranian defenses and wipe out all of the five biggest cities in Iran and still have the means to do more damage.

Hello Matt. Want to keep you posted on the status of my father-in-law in Odessa. He’s doing well. We don’t go to Odessa if only because we have a small child and we need to carry on his legacy. He will make a trip out in August to visit and we’ll take him on a usual beach excursion to Florida to relax. The Odessa beaches remain mined, sadly. He takes a train to Przszemysl station, then to Krakow and flies from there to the states. It helps keep him going at age 90. His apartment building (knock on wood) is unhit because years ago someone else put up another building blocking his view of the bay so that helps.

Um, Biden just told Netenyahu “Uh sorry babes we’re not doing this right now” lol

It’s good to know that Biden CAN control who Israel bombs and when, when he really wants to.

Biden can barely control his own bowels. I’d like to know who in the administration is calling the shots. It sure as hell isn’t him.

Biden has no bowel control problems of note to the laundry doers at the White House and is not known for frequent new emergency underwear purchases. On the other side, Trump seems to streak his underwear a lot, and his mouth puts out a lot of feces too. He’s still whining about the 2020 election and the failed insurrection of his supporters on January 6th, 2021.

Much as with some dogs, an angry and terrified people can act out extremely violently and are hard for even the proverbial, potential leash holders to try to restrict. I wouldn’t count on Biden having been any real restraint on Netanyahu. Rather Netanyahu and Israel have an interest in not seeing both Iran and Saudi Arabia wanting to rush faster into nuclear power status and have to consider what a broader regional escalation with a direct war between two nation-states would mean longer term for Israel even if purging most or all of Gaza and/or the West Bank of Palestinians ends up achieved like too many in Israel want nowadays.

The only reported person hit by the pre-announced Iran-launched barrage attack on Israel this weekend happened to be a 10-year-old Muslim girl. She is an Israeli-Arab Bedouin girl and was very seriously injured by shrapnel pieces.

The Iranians informed the Turks to clue in the US and thus Israel before sending over a huge wave of explosive projectiles and drones. Seems like they just wanted to put on a big display for their own side while hoping to not escalate into a direct war. At some point, there will be a massive miscalculation and then the mess will end up being bigger than at least one side to the conflict may have anticipated.
