Simply Perfect: Bircher Muesli On SWISS

Sprüngli Bircher Muesli, A Winner On The SWISS Saveurs Menu

On a flight from London to Zurich I tried the new SWISS Saveurs buy-on-board menu and ordered bircher muesli by Confiserie Sprüngli, a a Swiss luxury confectionery manufacturer founded in 1836.

I’ve loved bircher muesli, also known as overnight oats, since I first tried it on a trip to Germany and Switzerland 17 years ago. It’s a lovely alternative to cold cereal, porridge, and plain yogurt that contains oats, fruit, and nuts soaked in cream or yogurt and lemon juice.

I was enroute to Zurich and had just stepped off a United flight from San Francisco to London where the following breakfast was served before landing in business class:

But not a single thing on that platter came anything close to what I would experience in SWISS economy class:

This was 7.50CHF (about 8USD) well-spent. I loved that it came with a “real” spoon, not a plastic or wooden one. But most of all I loved the taste of the fresh raspberries, apples, and red currants mixed in with oats and yogurt. The quality was outstanding and the taste so good I contemplated ordering a second portion.

SWISS has moved to a buy-on-board model on short- and mid-haul flights. While that is lamentable in that I miss the delicious sandwiches that used to be served on the same route and routes of similar length, I love the high-quality food now available for purchase onboard.

If you find yourself on SWISS flight to or from Zurich, the bircher muesli is highly recommended.
