Welcome to my next trip report, which will detail my rather odd but still restful spring break in Germany, with flight reviews on United Airlines and SWISS.
Spring Break In Switzerland + Germany On United + SWISS
Spring break came at an inopportune time, as my wife Heidi was scheduled to work and could not modify her schedule, leaving me with the kids. As odd as it may sound to go to Germany and stay with my in-laws without Heidi, we decided it would be a good opportunity for Claire Marie and Augustine.
Then Augustine received an invitation to go skiing in the Swiss Alps with Heidi’s sister and her family, with Heidi’s mom also going along to help with the kids. That left Claire Marie, Heidi’s father, and me in Germany…hilarious in one sense, but it turned out to be a very sweet time.
We signed Claire Marie up for sports camp, which meant she had “school” every day from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, so I could work and then we could spend the evening together. It was a bit of father-daughter time that I have not been able to enjoy with her to the extent that I did with Augustine (before Claire Marie came along).
I’m more pragmatic these days when it comes to travel and booked us in economy class for the trip. I had planned to go to Copenhagen and then fly back form Copenhagen (even securing saver business class tickets on SAS), but when Augustine got the ski invitation we modified our trip.
I already shared a little bit about our time on the ground, so this trip report will focus on the travel itself.

Segments will include:
- United Airlines 787 Economy Class Los Angeles – London
- Lufthansa Senator Lounge London (LHR)
- SWISS A220 Economy Class London – Zürich
- SWISS Senator Lounge Zurich (ZRH – E Gates)
- SWISS A330 Economy Class Zurich – Chicago
Plus, Augustine will share his own review of the Frutt Mountain Resort in Kerns, Switzerland, a Kempsinki Hotel. He was fortunate to enjoy a lot of snow and get a lot of skiing in.
I did not use miles for these flights, booking a basic economy ticket (one-way on the way out, a round-trip on the return, with the inbound to Europe coming up later this summer). I look forward to sharing with you more about the trip…it was a fun one.

I’m visiting family in Switzerland now and my brother, who lives here, said that while it was quite warm today at around 80 it actually snowed in much of the country last week.
For aviation enthusiasts → The LX aircraft featured in the article is an A220-300 (age: 8.2 years). It is currently parked at ZRH.
