United CEO Reflects on Las Vegas Tragedy

When tragedy strikes, strong and steady leadership can help to assuage fear and begin the healing process. But sometimes a small heartfelt gesture, like a well-penned letter, accomplishes the same thing. United CEO Oscar Munoz is reflecting upon the recent attack in Las Vegas that killed 59 people.

In a letter to employees, passed on to me by one of my favorite FAs, Munoz expresses his sorrow for everyone who lost life. He also mentions that no United employees were hurt or injured in tragedy.

Dear United family,

The hearts and prayers of the United family are with the people of Las Vegas and everyone touched this morning in the wake of this horrific, evil act. Words cannot express the depth of our sorrow and compassion for the victims as well as for their loved ones who find themselves grieving so profoundly and so unexpectedly at this very moment.

Not only is Las Vegas a frequent destination for many of our customers and members of the United family, it is also a place many of our employees or their loved ones call home. I want to let all our team members know that we are currently reaching out to every United employee who either lives in or was scheduled to be in Las Vegas to ensure his or her safety. We are well on our way toward reaching out to all of these employees and so far, thankfully, we have not received reports of any injuries. Any of you scheduled to be in the area and have not already been contacted, I urge you to reach out to your supervisors as soon as possible to let them know where you are.

Even as we closely monitor this tragic situation, we will maintain our current relief efforts to those areas affected by recent storms.

Our service to the city will continue today as scheduled; even still I know all of us, wherever we find ourselves in the world today, will keep our thoughts and sentiments joined with those who are suffering.

Humbly,
Oscar

I thought it was a great letter. Do you think Munoz left anything out?

definitely a LOT better than his initial response to the ORD incident. and it’s actually a nice gesture for him to write such a letter considering UA wasn’t in any shape or form remotely related to the vegas tragedy.

i’m less concerned about Munoz and more about the planned successor Kirby, seeing how he converted AA from celebrity-go-to-carrier to spirit-air-plus-widebodies.
