Who needs United First when you have a LH Senator Lounge?!

Matthew Klint Posted onJune 20, 2010November 14, 2023 6 Comments

Last week, for the second time since United’s UDU program started, I missed an upgrade. It was a Thursday afternoon IAD-DEN (hub-hub) flight on a 757 and I was traveling on an S-fare, so it wasn’t a big surprise that I wound up in row 16. And to be honest, I was very content in my exit row seat, which provided more legroom than any seat in First Class.

#2 on the list…

I had a feeling my upgrade would not clear, so I ventured over the Lufthansa Senator Lounge in the B-Concourse to have a lunch. Let’s just say that was a wise choice…

a table with plates of food and a newspaper

a bowl of soup with croutons on a plate

a plate of salad with tomatoes carrots and lettuce

a loaf of bread on a plate

a plate of food on a table

a plate of food on a table

a slice of cheesecake with fruit on a plate

a plate and a glass on a table

Now that’s what I call a good lunch! Who needs United First when you have a LH lounge nearby? From now on, I will dine in this lounge even if my upgrade has already cleared. There’s no comparison to the delicious food that LH offers and the panini UA would have offered me had my upgrade cleared. LH wins hands down. With the LH Lounge at IAD now open at 0830, I have another reason to route through IAD!

I stopped by this weekend and was pleased to see the 8:20am-8:15pm daily hours. I went with the gummy bears & celery, breakfast of champions.

@Erich: The extended hours are great! Did they have anything more substantive for breakfast? Eggs and bacon?

Matt, what are the entrance requirements for this lounge?? LH is known for not allowing people to enter if not flying LH. Does this hold true here?

@Rocky: A Star Gold card and same-day Star Alliance boarding pass are all that is needed for the Senator Lounge. A United Club card works for the Business Lounge downstairs.

Can you get into the Dulles LH Senator’s lounge with a United Global First ticket but no Gold Alliance?

@Cheryl, yes you can. If they try to direct you downstairs to the business lounge, insist that first class tickets have Senator access regardless of status.
