10 Scenic Airport Landings

Matthew Klint Posted onDecember 17, 2010 4 Comments

Budget Travel queried hundreds of pilots and FAs to formulate a list of the best scenic airport approaches. As they recommend, reserve a window seat if you are flying to one of the following cities:

  1. Philipsburg, St. Maarten
  2. Mammoth Lakes, CA
  3. Hong Kong
  4. Queenstown, New Zealand
  5. Jackson, WY
  6. London
  7. St. George’s Parish, Bermuda
  8. Aspen
  9. New York City
  10. Oranjestad, Aruba

Not bad choices. I have not flown to all of those cities, but my top-ten list is below:

  1. San Diego (maybe it’s more of an emotional reaction to my fond childhood memories of traveling to San Diego, but I think the views are spectacular)
  2. Sydney, Australia
  3. Washington National
  4. New York LaGuardia
  5. Hong Kong
  6. London
  7. Antigua
  8. Johannesburg (to see the Soweto and other areas of poverty contrasted with bustling central JNB is both memorable and humbling)
  9. Berlin Tempelhof (sadly, the airport is now closed to commercial air traffic)
  10. Tel Aviv
  11. Buenos Aires Aeroparque

Anything I left out?

I quite like Boston. And San Francisco if you’re approaching from the north & fly past the golden gate & downtown.

YTZ – Toronto Island airport. The approach is along Lake Ontario, parallel to the waterfront skyline.
