A Perfect Steak on Austrian Airlines

Matthew Klint Posted onAugust 7, 2017November 14, 2023 4 Comments

One purpose of my weekly Meal of the Week installment is to compare steaks. I’ve written about steaks on Asiana, Iberia, SAS, SWISS, Thai, and United. If it isn’t clear, I love steak…even on airplanes. This week I recount a tremendous steak on Austrian Airlines.

It was October 2011 and I was returning home from a weekend in Amman with my friend Denny. Our flight left at 4:20p and after a full day of touring we were hungry.

Austrian did not disappoint.

After takeoff, we were offered a refreshing mint lime drink similar to what you can enjoy on the Gulf Carriers. It was served with canapés: chicken with mandarin orange and bruschetta atop a thin slice of crustless bread.

Out came the meal tray. It include an appetizer, main course, bread, and cheese course all on a single tray. There was time to space out each course, but serving everything by tray certainly makes things logistically easier in a full cabin. Plus, the dishes fit together nicely like a puzzle.

The steak was amazing, nicely seasoned and cooked medium. The vegetables and potatoes accompanying it were also drizzled in a high-quality olive oil and cooked al dente.

The appetizer was also great — a refreshing tomato and cucumber salad in a yogurt sauce with salmon.

Hot bread from the oven was also served preemptively on the tray.

Denny ordered a chicken/egg dish. While he enjoyed it, I think I ordered the better dish.a plate of food with cheese and sauce

Dessert included raspberry pudding and tea.

You’ll notice “business class” on this 4hr flight included only an economy class seat with the middle blocked. That’s disappointing. But the meals are never disappointing on Austrian. I could do several additional posts on amazing meals on Austrian. Their motto should be, “Come hungry, leave happy.”

As much as I hate OS for being the test bed for all the LH status benefits ‘enhancements’, they do have great food and it’s even served hot on 40 minute Dash hops.

Do they offer the premium coffees on so short a flight?

OS always does a great steak. Here is dinner from a few weeks ago on MIA-VIE in business. It was “Filet of beef / root vegetables / celeriac mousseline”. Yum!
