Delta Flight Diverts To JFK After Contaminated Meals Served Enrotue to Amsterdam

Delta Air Lines flight 136 departed Detroit (DTW) last night, July 2, 2024, at 10:35 pm bound for Amsterdam (AMS). The flight was operated by an Airbus A330-300. Like all transatlantic flights, a meal was served after takeoff.

But it was soon discovered that at least some of the meals were “contaminated” and this was only discovered after they were served. It is not clear if food poisoning occurred onboard, but the decision was made to divert to New York Kennedy, where the flight landed at 3:59 am local time.

One passenger was not happy about her delayed journey:

.@delta I need to know how you’re going to get me to Amsterdam today – I’m on the plane that’s emergency landing at JFK because you served passengers “contaminated” food – I don’t need hotel/food vouchers I need to arrive in Amsterdam today.

— Virginia (@tralala_bk) July 3, 2024

Per Delta:

“Delta flight 136 from Detroit to Amsterdam diverted to New York’s JFK early Wednesday morning after it was discovered that a portion of the in-flight meal service was spoiled.

“Medical crews were on site to meet the aircraft and treat any affected passengers and crew members. Delta teams will immediately work to gather information into how this incident occurred.

“This is not the service Delta is known for and we sincerely apologize to our customers for the inconvenience and delay in their travels.”

Medical personnel examined 24 people upon arrival, according to the NY Port Authority.

The flight was canceled and Delta is now working to get passengers to Amsterdam or their final destination.

First eat at home . Then wait and get food across the pond .

Does no one inspect to verify safe refrigeration for food , proper food preparation , or that employees wash their hands in hot water ?

+1. You beat me on your post. That’s exactly what should happen on late flights. No meal. If you can afford flying you should be able to afford a meal at the airport or eat at home before going to the airport.

        @Santastico … +1 . Wise thinking .

Pilots are also served the food .

Food preparation and cleanliness ought to be the first priority after safety and aircraft maintenance .

I suggest the TSA can be given another duty : to white glove the catering kitchens .

Seriously, who needs to eat on a flight that leaves at 10:35PM? Does anyone really wait until after 11pm to have a meal at a US airline? On flights leaving that late, people should be told to eat before boarding and nothing will be served until breakfast. Leaving at that time I want quiet time and rest and not be kept awake because FAs have to serve meals at 11pm.

Regarding telling people to eat at home, keep in mind that sometimes passengers have connecting flights. There have been countless times that I’ve had to run between a domestic flight (with no meal) to my connecting flight and didn’t have the opportunity to eat. While it may be 10:35PM local time, I may have just flow in from a time zone 4 hours behind and the meal is a welcome treat.

If you don’t want a meal – then just don’t take a meal. It seems silly to tell everyone else that they shouldn’t get one and encourage the airlines to offer less.

This is my attitude and I agree – there is often not time to eat between flights.

I appreciate that there are budget airlines that do bare-bones, but… to post that meals aren’t a big deal on planes goes against the very existence of this blog and aviation enthusiasts. We love the experience including sometimes getting an amenity kit, or maybe branded coloring books for the kids, or even the lousy inflight magazine.

Heck, I wonder if there’s anyone who COLLECTS the in-flight magazines? A future episode of Hoarders? 🙂

As Matt points out: Some people simply don’t have time to catch food and if they did, do you want to be the poor soul whose stuck sitting next to someone bringing BBQ ribs onboard and eating them after takeoff?

Sometimes there are medical emergencies and these things happen. It’s the pilot discretion as well as avoiding litigation.

What does someone’s political leaning have to do with a post about how an airline messed up? I thought you MAGAs were emotionally stable geniuses, never getting triggered over something so inconsequential?

Interesting – gives you some insight into the narcissistic mind and it’s Marxist leanings. “It’s all about me!”

I think this type of scenario unfortunately happens from time to time, and sucks to have a diversion because of it, but I feel like the amount of pouncing on AA or United if this were to occur on their metal is diminished here because of the ‘premium’ aura that surrounds DL.

Meanwhile, on a recent (last week) transatlantic flight in economy on DL, the meals that DL served were pretty disgusting (my wife and I skipped them, but agree you need to have the option to take it or skip it). Not only that, for the child meals that we preordered, they served a spicy version of the regular pasta that everyone else got (because kids love a spicy sauce) and, instead of the dreaded ubiquitous gross rectangular pastry snack in a box that everyone else got before landing (healthy choices of ‘chocolate nutella’ or ‘egg and cheese’ for the plane), they served the kids what was described as a ‘vegetable panini’ and which was in actuality a 4″x4″ piece of bread with a piece of wilted lettuce, a piece of eggplant and a piece of red pepper.

By comparison, the child meals on AA transatlantic I got recently were actually pretty good, and AA served yogurt with granola for breakfast (yes, sweet and flavored, but still).

Anyway, think this blog does a good job highlighting actual meals that are served, and hope you continue that!

We have several UA simps here, being a UA centric blog and all, and DL is probably the most mocked and hated airline out of the big 3 in the online avgeek community (definitely in communities where a “Tim Dunn” shows up), whose bubble opinions sharply contrast actual paying, flying casual customers.

It’s not about MAGAS as much as you would like to think it is. It’s about whining and feeling entitled. Which, I’m sorry to say, epitomizes the mantra of the left wing.

For example: Where’s my handout? Society should pay off my college and my debts! I should be able to live on the street, do as many drugs as I want and California should invest $20B to ensure my happiness. I want to work from home! I deserve $20 per hour as a barmaid, common laborer, busboy. etc. etc.

It’s not fair that I should sit in coach!!! It’s not equitable!!! I deserve to be at the front of the line- I’m gay, black, transexual and/or otherwise oppressed.

    Get it yet?

Generally, I AVOID FOOD when I travel and am very careful where I eat and in what restaurants. And I don’t have to eat the food on airplanes since I only fly economy. Not only is food poisoning a risk but look at all the processed food with all the sugar and preservatives. Very bad for your health!

I think the people at the catering thought that it was better to have bad or questionable food than no food. Could you imagine the complaints they would have had if they said, ‘sorry no food today’.
