What Is Explora Journeys?
Explora Journeys is not really a cruise. I mean, it absolutely is a cruise but it’s different than what most think of. There’s no multi-colored waterslides, no crowded swimming pools, and no nickel-and-dime approach. Everything is included: taxes, port fees, gratuities – there’s nothing more than the price just like at an all-inclusive resort. It’s all specialty dining restaurants onboard, no banquet-style dinners and there’s no buffet either but there is a quick order service with everything from grilled lobster tails to hand stretched pizza. The in-room dining menu includes a filet mignon. (Pictured below is a 16 oz Ribeye from the onboard Steakhouse.)
The entry-level room is a balcony suite or “Ocean Terrace” and includes a full-size shower, heated marble floors, a walk-in closet, and a Dyson hair dryer as the bare minimum. Explora Journeys often includes smaller ports the bigger ships can’t get into as it’s only a 900-passenger vessel; a brand new build ship.
It’s not really a cruise, it’s a luxury, five-star resort at sea. It’s quickly become one of our favorite travel products.

Conclusion
We love Explora Journeys and are looking forward to our trip. The brand rarely offers trips this low and for last minute travelers, especially around the holidays or winter season, these are about as attractive as it gets. For a luxury all-inclusive resort product in the Caribbean over the same period, you’d struggle to find something in the same range. What happens to those who paid higher prices a few months ago? To me, this is the problem with cruises etc. If you live by discount9ing you die by discounting.
@Antwerp – This happens every day in commerce and it’s one of the breaks, right? If you buy an airline ticket for six months from now it’s probably going to go below what it’s at now and probably going to go higher at some point too. It doesn’t change your price if it becomes cheaper in the future so I don’t really know that it is any different than other aspects of travel.
I don’t see that as the same. In the case of airline tickets now you can just cancel, apply to credit, and rebook (though I seldom ever see fares drop closer in…more so award availability opens up). Hotels will honor a lower rate if one comes available. I have done this dozens of times.
Thus, my question, how do Cruise ships handle it? Do they allow rebooking under the new rate?
I thought the entire purpose of travel was to do something important or compelling at a destination , and to use the best means of transportation to go there .
Cunard across the Atlantic to Southampton or Le Havre has a purpose and an adventure .
This type of cruise appears aimless without purpose .
@Alert – I am going to disagree on basically all fronts of this. There are thousands of resorts where the purpose is relaxation and restoration rather than to do something important or compelling. The pleasure of the journey is the compelling piece. If the only purpose of travel was to reach a destination, why not fly coach, it’s just a means to an end? And I don’t really understand the compelling piece of the Cunard trans-Atlantic trip other than its historical value. I think for many people, even for extreme travelers, sometimes the opportunity to step away from the day-to-day is the most important part.
Additionally, not everyone has traveled the Caribbean extensively and a lot of these itineraries offer a nice survey opportunity. For example, we loved St. Barth’s but a separate trip to all of those destinations would have been impractical, and frankly, some of them don’t require a whole trip dedicated just to that destination. So you get to find out what you like and don’t for future return visits.
@Kyle … Thank you for the reasoned reply .
For myself , the compelling parts of trans-Atlantic travel are the fresh air and natural environment . I greatly enjoyed the storms and the winds , and remember them to this day . Ocean travel benefits both mental and physical health .
