Getting What You Pay For…

Kyle Stewart Posted onApril 28, 2015September 16, 2021 3 Comments

If you are considering booking travel or signing up for a new credit card please click here. Both support LiveAndLetsFly.com.

If you haven’t followed us on Facebook or Instagram, add us today.

This is loosely about travel, but mostly it’s not.

A friend of mine, we will call her Megan (because that is her name) started buying mistake fares about a year ago, and has suffered the same fate of all of those that have purchased a mistake fare for practically nothing.  That fate is the complete disillution with relation to what things should actually cost, let me give you an example.

“Hey Megan, look at this great deal, $550 to Europe from Chicago” – me

“I’ll wait until they go down a little, bit.  I mean, I bought those tickets to Abu Dhabi for less than $200” – Megan

We all do that though – we think we can get a lot for practically very little.

That takes me to fiverr.com today.  I need a new logo for the Trip Sherpa because we have acquired a travel website to facilitate some of the requests we get to help book travel.  I have used fiverr.com before and usually the quality of the work is really good and I receive it really quickly.  I ordered business card designs about three months ago and it was a total failure, but for $5, you win some and you lose some.

Then I ordered this logo three days ago and I still hadn’t heard anything back, nothing at all until I decided to cancel.  I decided to try one last time.  Here is my description:

“The name of my business is The Trip Sherpa. I am a travel consultant that helps people to travel for less. I would like a logo that perhaps looked retro and had a a silver DC-3 type aircraft incorporated into the design. For an example of what a DC-3 looks like, please see the attachment. You can also visit any of my websites, thetripsherpa.com, upgrd.com/thetripsherpa. This logo will appear on [yet unreleased name URL for travel booking webste] for our new travel agency division.”

I included this image (which by total luck happened to be licensed by creative commons and I can display here):

dc-3_on_ice_colors_adjusted

Then I received this text response with the attached, total releavnt logo design.

“its really hardworking and costly for me sir if you liked my work please sir give me tips as bonus………thanx a lot sir”

Nothing makes me want to tip more than when you ask me for one…

Maybe nothing more than turning in this awesome work.

Who’s to blame here?  The awesome designer or me, who fell into the trap of thinking that for $5 I was going to get a high quality logo matching my thoughts and dreams?

– Sherpa

While not surprising, it is sad to see the growing list of carriers retiring this superjumbo jet. On Malaysia Airlines, I flew the #A380 once from Kuala Lumpur (KUL) to London (LHR) and had the entire first class cabin to myself (full review on the blog). It was a beautiful flight that I will always remember.

While I’ve enjoyed catching up on others over the years, now it is time for me to return to Instagram.
