For years I’ve dreamed on Live and Let’s Fly about taking a trip to Greenland, the number one destination on my travel bucket list. The prospect of new service from Canadian North from Canada to Greenland solidifies my desire to make the trip happen in 2021.
I’m Dreaming Of A 2021 Greenland Trip
One of my favorite trips of all-time was to Longyearbyen, up near the Arctic Circle in Norway. The town was beautiful and I spent the night in an abandoned Russian mining island. I love Scandinavia and I love the far north.
My plan for 2018, 2019, and 2020 was to travel to Copenhagen and from there take an Air Greenland A330 to Greenland. When I was in Copenhagen last year I even toyed with the idea of going alone…though this is a trip I want to take with my wife. The natural beauty and unique landscape of Greenland is surely a sight to behold.
Traveling both directions via Copenhagen is not exactly time or cost efficient, but that was part of the charm. Now, however, we will likely be able to travel in one direction via Canada.
As One Mile at a Time noted, Canadian North and Air Greenland have announced a new partnership…and the possibilities are amazing.
“Now that there is a vaccine in distribution, it’s time to start looking ahead to partnering on flights through Ottawa-Iqaluit-Nuuk and Ottawa-Iqaluit-Ilulissat. We’d also like to connect Greenland directly with southern Canada, possibly via Toronto during the tourism season, which includes March, April and August to October.”
Yes, yes, yes!
Canadian North will add two Boeing 737-700 aircraft to its fleet next year and in doing so, can provide overwater transport between Canada and Greenland, which is less than 600 miles!
Even if Canada does not re-open to Americans, I hope to be able to transit through to Greenland. If traveling with my German wife, we hopefully will have no issue entering Greenland, though Greenland is semi-autonomous and opted out of the European Union many years ago.
It has really been a long time since I have become excited about a future international trip and I am just bursting with excitement about finally heading to Greenland next year.
CONCLUSION
With a new movie coming out this month titled Greenland plus President Trump’s odd demand to buy Greenland from Denmark, I expect interest in traveling to Greenland next year may be at an all-time.
Fulfilling a travel bucket list item that dates back several years, I am dreaming of a trip to Greenland next year…and certainly want to travel via Canada to fly Canadian North in one direction and hopefully spend some time there too.
Any interest in a trip to Greenland in 2021?
I was looking at Canadian North flights to Nunavut this summer. But I might do Greenland instead if things open up, as Greenland at least has a limited tourism infrastructure.
The Canadian North flights would have a domestic leg YYZ/YOW to Iqualuit, so you might be stuck waiting for Canada to reopen borders on that one
Absolutely yes, though we’ll have to see how the logistics work. As Willem notes, unless the YYZ-based flights go nonstop (and that’s if Americans are allowed into Greenland in the first place), you’ll require a domestic connection in Canada, which I imagine is off the table. Plus personally I’d rather wait for Nunavut to reopen and check out that area, too.
What season are you looking at going? Border issues aside, Winter might prove a bit harsh.
Best wishes on your dream trip. hope it comes to fruition in the near future. JEALOUS!
@ Matthew — Once upon a time, I dreamt of booking a bmi award ticket to Greenland! 😉
At no time did the President “demand” to buy Greenland. To say so is inherently nonsensical. A purchase of anything requires an offer and acceptance. An offer was made, but was rejected. He also wasn’t the first president to attempt acquiring Greenland (Harry Truman). But, alas, never miss an opportunity to take pot shots at someone who you don’t like by way of falsehoods, I guess. I mean, a lie repeated often enough becomes the truth, right?
I think trump either out of naivete or spite brought fresh thinking into foreign policy and he had much better outcomes than obama ( which was really Joe biden, and which was pathetic.)
Trump had good policies, bad execution and worse executioneer. I hope Democrats don’t go back to business as usual.
. That tinfoil hat looks good on you!!
I hope you’ll spend some time in Ottawa on the way!
Would love to!
I’d like to echo this: I stayed for 4 days when I ran the Ottawa Marathon (my first one!) last year, and loved “living” there. Fantastic restaurant scene, beautiful views along the Ottawa river, and Parliament and other National museums were a joy to visit.
I’m sure many would love the idea, maybe even the reality. For me: indescribably ghastly. Worse even than that hideous-sounding LongYearbeen joint..
Tromso and Punta Arenas are as cold-climate adventurous as I get…
My spouse attended an arctic social science workshop in Nuuk in 2009. I flew in a few days later and we spent a week exploring Greenland by ferry. That is really the best way to see Greenland.
Oh, and within 25 minutes of landing in Nuuk I found the hipster coffee bar with the best coffee in town. I would tamper your expectations to find a decent cappuccino in Greenland. Denmark has great coffee, Greenland – not so much.
Hopefully I can find one decent one! 😉
We all like excitements, however, Canadian North doesn’t even mention Greenland on their website.
Having been there a few times and been instrumental in taking travel agents and PR folks there when Air Greenland operated the very unsuccessful non-stop flights BWI – SFJ in 2007-08, I am excited, as the new proposed service via Iqaluit makes perfect sense. The Covid-19 problems will be worked; please be patient.
The desire to go is totally underestimated. This new service will become an instant success and the infrastructure is at a very high level not realized by most travelers.
Matthew, I spent five days in Longyearbyen in Feb of this year – fabulous!
They used to fly Iqaluit to either Tule or Narsarsuaq Canadian Regional way back 20 yrs ago…then you connect to Air Greenland to the east coast of Greenland then you connect to Air Iceland to Reykjavik ( not to Keflavik) then you take Iceland air to continental EUrope or Faroe Islands airline Atlantic Airways via Gothavn??… to europe and it was aaaaall the way from Ottawa or Montreal on turboprops DHC-8-200 or 300 series…soo romantic…just like in the 1950s…but then when Canadian got swallowed by Air Canada in 2000 and air Greenland started nonstops from Narsarsuaq to Copenhagen on 757 first then on A330 200 all that turboprop polar Aurora Borealis route just died…. there are several major scandinavian tour operators who offer tour of Greenland for backpackers but only from Europe. Mind Yous…its expensive you are looking at 5…7 grand for a week with canoe tours of southern Greenland summer only daytime only in a log cabin of 6…8…10 people nothing fancy….for yous gentlmen First n Biz cabins pamperers…that may be not an easy trip to stomach through…but dont worry…turbo prop luxury cabin romantic is comming back on the Aurora Borealis route just like in the 1950s…with the inauguration of Deutsche PANAM AIRWAYS GmbH – Berliners’ Favorite Airline…from LAX via Chicago…Montreal…Narsarsuaq…Keflavik…Edinburgh…all the way to Berlin…
