Horrifying Vegetarian Meal or Impressive Domestic Meal Service?

Matthew Klint Posted onNovember 21, 2017November 14, 2023 2 Comments

Context is always key. Outrage is often feigned. Ignorance is strength.

A tweet of an airline meal has gone viral.

It is purportedly an economy class “vegetarian” meal on Avianca, the Colombian flag carrier and member of Star Alliance.

The vegetarian meal on this flight is an apple and a pear wrapped in clingfilm, served with a knife and fork. pic.twitter.com/CT7hypCylb

Steve Hogarty writes, “The vegetarian meal on this flight is an apple and a pear wrapped in clingfilm, served with a knife and fork.”

You’ve got to read all the replies…the outrage is epic.

But there’s a key unanswered question…what route was Hogarty flying?

I would be outraged too if this is all he received on a Bogota to London flight.

But if this was a domestic flight from Bogota to Cartagena, I’d be quite impressed. Some airlines don’t even serve complimentary meals on 10+ hour flights from Newark to Honolulu..Any meal, let alone a fresh special meal, on a domestic flight is nothing to complain about.

I did tweet Hogarty and am still waiting for a response…until the routing question is answered, we really cannot express outrage. I’m betting, however, the was a short national or regional flight and therefore the fruit constituted a nice meal, not a horrific tragedy.

Avianca actually reached out to Hogarty to address the situation and was met by a smug reply. If Hogarty doesn’t bother to confirm which route he was traveling on, I hope Avianca will.

Some of the replies are so funny. One person complains about service on a British Airways flight and BA quickly charms in to ask for further details. The man vents about not receiving a vegetarian meal then fesses up that he never ordered one.

CONCLUSION

Mark this story as developing. Sadly, there is no way to ascertain at this point if Avianca should be ashamed of itself or defending itself.

I have no complaint if they serve me this on a short flight, would be quite happy to have fruits than unhealthy processed food.

I was on a LAN flight from Bogota to Miami a few years ago. ordered a gluten free meal… I got four slices of honeydew melon on one plate, four slice of cantaloupe on the second plate, and four more slices of honeydew on the last plate. Nothing else. Yes, it was gluten free. Since I cannot eat much high potassium fruit, I just picked at it. Good thing I always carry something to eat in my bag. BTW, my wife got a ham sandwich on a roll, four slices of honeydew melon, and another bread roll. No comments needed.
