A Large Earthquake In The Caribbean Sea

Deep in the Caribbean Sea, between Belize and the Cayman Islands, a 7.6 magnitude earthquake was registered Saturday evening, February 8th, 2025.

“The earthquake was reported just before 6:30 p.m local time about 125 miles south-southwest of George Town in the Cayman Islands at a depth of about 6 miles, according to the US Geological Survey.” – NY Post

Tsunami warnings were issued for the following coastal countries:

  • Mexico
  • Cayman Islands
  • Costa Rica
  • Bahamas
  • Belize
  • Jamaica
  • Honduras
  • Guatemala
  • Cuba
  • Nicuragua
  • Panama
  • Haiti

Some reports suggested the earthquake might have been as large as an 8.0 magnitude which would rival the worst known strike in recorded history:

“The largest recorded earthquake to have occurred in the Caribbean is believed to have been the El Cibao earthquake in the Dominican Republic in 1946 with aftershocks extending into 1947-48. The earthquake was of magnitude 8.1 and generated a tsunami which caused 75 deaths and rendered 20,000 homeless.” – UWI Seismic

No Reports Of Damage

There has not been any structural damage reported at the time of posting. Some reports online suggested warnings were issued for the US gulf coast, but those have been proven false with any threat to the southwest. There’s not been any reported tsunamis confirmed and despite the dramatic magnitude of the quake, its depth and distance from land may have minimized its affect.

“The Cayman Islands government had warned residents of coastal areas to move inland in a message on its website.” – Barron’s

There’s been no word from damage or destruction to ships that may have been in the area at the time of the occurance.

We live in the affected area. I felt an extended but gentle shake. We can see and hear the Caribbean from our house; there was no unusual wave action.

We were on Virgin Gorda, having dinner when we were told to immediately settle the bill and get to high ground. It was scary for a while until we got another notice that is was cancelled.

We’re in Cancun and felt it quite strongly, as well as after shocks. There were additional tremors late last night as well, but no damage to the resort or water action.
