A Bumpy Ride On Delta Air Lines Down The Baja California Coast

Matthew Klint Posted onDecember 14, 2024December 14, 2024 9 Comments

I’m on the final portion of my SAS Million Mile Bonus trip, with a quick trip to Mexico that I’m sharing about real-time style.

Our journey to Mexico began with a Delta Air Lines flight from Los Angeles (LAX) To Los Cabos (SJD) on a 737-900 and was marked by light chop throughout the flight, meaning I did not get to experience Delta’s world-class service onboard.

Delta’s 737-900 has 2-2 seating in first class and 3-3 seating in economy class. Having booked our ticket late and not holding Delta SkyMiles Medallion status (the SkyTeam Plus status with SAS did not get me anything in terms of seats), Augustine and I wound up toward the back of the plane.

We took off on-time and immediately experienced a light chop onboard…it wasn’t “turbulence” but it was bumpy.

Unfortunately, the bumps meant that I could not experience Delta’s premium service onboard! 😉

Flight attendants hastily came down the aisle offering water, but that was it…no beverage service or snacks.

Honestly, the chop wasn’t too bad at all and I think the “better safe than sorry” approach taken by US pilots and cabin crews is not unreasonable but also perhaps not the right balance. Sure, I survived just fine without a cup of coffee and a Biscoff cookie…but it was a 911-flight…and even if there was forecasted turbulence, the seatbelt light was off for half the flight!

When I went back to use the lavatory, I asked the flight attendants if I could have a cookie for my son and was obliged, with one flight attendant remarking that the flight was too bumpy.

Whatever…I had a productive flight thanks to a plug and free Wi-Fi onboard. It worked flawlessly, I knocked out two hours of work, and Augustine enjoyed the seatback screen (watching a LEGO movie he’s probably seen many times already…).

It was an easy start to our trip.

Which of your flights have not yet shown as being credited to your account for this SAS promo?

All carriers have now posted. I’m still missing SV and MF segments. As long as the Air Europa Express route counts, we’ve done it.

That’s one reason I avoid Delta: I’m often Transatlantic, and there will be light chop at least. Delta culture has long been about smooth air, and the moment it ain’t smooth, that light goes on. Other airlines are much more reasonable and still manage not to break the FAs’ ankles.

I haven’t heard a Spanish speaker use the term embarcar en el avión since the days Televisa used to cast their productions with white Caucasian actors only. The average speaker would use abordar or subir al avión.

It’s almost as if Delta offers the same level of service as every other major carrier in the US
