Discounted Short-haul Awards Still Available on United Airlines

Matthew Klint Posted onSeptember 20, 2010November 14, 2023 Leave a Comment

Through the end of the month, economy award trips under 700 miles in the U.S. and Canada are still 30% off on United. These flights must be on United metal and be booked at least a week prior to departure. Only economy awards are discounted–first and business class will require the full amount of miles.

Both standard and saver awards are discounted, as are both one-way and roundtrip awards. For example, a round-trip saver award under this promotion is 17,500 miles and a one-way saver award is 8,750 miles. You must purchase before September 30 for travel before January 7, 2011.

I hate to use my United miles for anything other than first class, but I’m about ready to burn 17,500 miles for a trip to Halifax. The great thing about this offer is that while the 700 mile limit is strictly enforced, it is calculated from departure point to destination point. Connections beyond the 700-mile limit are permitted. Take Halifax, for example: it is 689 miles from Philadelphia. UA doesn’t serve YHZ from PHL, but they do from Washington Dulles and I am able to route through IAD at the discoutned mileage rate even though the IAD-YHZ flight is 823 miles.

And look at the revenue price for the ticket below. Using 17,500 miles for an $830 ticket is getting almost five cents per miles–not a bad deal.
