The Hyatt House Tampa Airport Westshore is a conveniently-located, spacious hotel option perfect for families.

This review is a little different because we stayed in the property twice within four days bookending a trip from Tampa. We received two different room types but I have combined both into the same review.

Location

As one might from the name of the property, the Hyatt House Tampa Airport Westshore was, in fact, a hotel near Tampa International Airport. I should have put a spoiler alert in front of that, my apologies. While there is another Hyatt closer location to Raymond James Stadium, this is not that hotel but it’s just 2.8 miles (a seven-minute drive) for those visiting for area events.

Guests staying at the property ahead of or following a flight as we were, the hotel is conveniently located even when stuck at a very unfortunate traffic light. The journey takes between 5-15 minutes depending on that one miserable stoplight and departure terminal. The shuttle leaves every 30 minutes (on the hour and half hour) from 4 AM – 11 PM, though I’d recommend calling for an intermittent pickup.

Property

Hyatt Hours prides itself on “residentially-inspired suites” which is one reason why we find ourselves choosing them more and more over Hyatt Place or other select-service properties. The hotel offers limited event space, a fitness center, on-site bar and restaurant, and for those that want to kick back and relax, an outdoor pool. As Hyatt House properties are built for those who intend an extended stay or traveling families, I was delighted to see a grill on the patio for guest use.

In addition to the full-service restaurant (which was closed when we arrived on both visits after midnight) snack bar convenience store was available with items for purchase.

World of Hyatt Benefits

Both our flights gave us short nights and we didn’t have a chance to experience breakfast in the morning. Of note, while the hotel parking lot was absolutely full, several room options were available. We weren’t proactively offered an upgraded room despite my Globalist status but for the longer night stay (second visit) I did request one and received one. When we checked in at the front desk, a new night audit was in training so I didn’t raise the matter further. The reason we chose this property besides its proximity to the airport was that our Hyatt Globalist benefits allowed us to park our car while we were away without incurring any charges. That parking is anywhere exterior to the parking garage and a simple placard on the rearview mirror lets security know the car is approved for parking with dates displayed.

Suite

The suite was a “studio” which provided some level of separation between the bedroom and the living room but also a kitchenette. I will always prefer a closed-door suite and a larger kitchen regardless of the stay duration but the design of this room allowed for some of that same privacy.

Bedroom

The suite/studio bedroom features a pair of nightstands, a separate window with a pool view, and access to the turnstile TV which can face either the living room or bedroom. The bed was comfortable as expected, and the living room had enough space for my family of three to relax.

Kitchen/Living Room

The bar in the kitchen provides ample space to serve a meal or get work done as a desk. There are plugs on the table and a tall chair for one.

The kitchenette provided all the features for cooking during an extended stay with a stove, microwave, sink, coffee maker, plates and cutlery, refrigerator, and even a dishwasher.

Standard Room

The standard room was a bit of a disappointment. While it was clean, reasonably new, it was every bit a standard rectangle hotel room. Why is this a problem? Simple. Hyatt House charges more than similarly configured Hyatt Place properties. For the amenities in the suite/studio a higher price is fair, but for a standard hotel room there’s nothing premium that warrants a higher price.

I’d argue that the standard room actually has less space and features than a similarly equipped Hyatt Place. That said, this room too provided a pool view and a limited couch that was insufficient for my small family of three.

Value

The value for this hotel was fair for the suite/studio, and the added Globalist benefits like included extended parking. The cash price of this stay would have been $171/night or 8,000 points – we chose to redeem our points. World of Hyatt points are worth about 2¢/each according to my valuation so I did slightly better to redeem instead of spending cash but it’s more or less a toss up. That said, for a standard room I would not consider this to be a better value than a nearby Hyatt Place property.

What do you think? Have you stayed at this property? Do you have another Tampa airport hotel you recommend?

Best Room Available benefits don’t apply at Hyatt Place or Hyatt House properties per the WoH T&Cs.

@malaysiaairlines just announced it would retire i @malaysiaairlines just announced it would retire its A380 fleet. While not surprising, it is sad to see the growing list of carriers retiring this superjumbo jet. On Malaysia Airlines, I flew the #A380 once from Kuala Lumpur (KUL) to London (LHR) and had the entire first class cabin to myself (full review on the blog). It was a beautiful flight that I will always remember.
