Live and Let’s Fly Weekend Digest: July 2, 2017

Matthew Klint Posted onJuly 2, 2017November 14, 2023 Leave a Comment

Greetings from over the Atlantic on a rare overnight westbound flight. The week took an unexpected turn as I found myself on a very quick jaunt to Germany and Jordan. More details on that trip are coming.

In the coming week I’ll finish my Air Serbia trip report and begin the promised Longyearben trip report from last summer. As my family prepares for another extended trip to Germany, I’ll be busy tying up loose ends in LA.

The biggest news item of the week was United’s announced devaluation coming this November. I expressed thanksgiving for the news, because I anticipated something much worse.

I wish you all a great week ahead.

My premise is very simple: the changes are minor and could have been significantly worse. There are no negative surprises and the 8,000 mile one-way tickets are a pleasant positive surprise.

Sun Country First Class Meals

Flying Sun Country is like stepping into a time machine and going back to 2007. If you’re flying to/from Minneapolis, at least give Sun Country a look. I was very pleasantly surprised with my flight.

Why Are Status Hotel Upgrades Tough?

A provocative post from Kyle on whether it is right to insist upon upgrades:

I am sure the commenters are getting their keyboards all fired up, ready to tell me how entitled I am. That’s fine. That’s literally what I am. I am entitled to these benefits as a result of my status. Hilton, Hyatt, IHG, and all the rest have made a deal with me, if I stay at their hotels an awful lot, and spend an awful lot of money with them, I am entitledto these benefits.

United’s upcoming devaluation will eliminate the single most lucrative award on the chart. Find out what it is and how you can book it.
