The Perfect Pre-Arrival Snack in Lufthansa Business Class

Matthew Klint Posted onMarch 10, 2018November 14, 2023 7 Comments

Sometimes…many times, actually…the simple things in life are the best things in life. My pre-arrival meal on Lufthansa Business Class may not have been fancy, but it certainly hit the spot. It’s the subject of this week’s Meal of the Week.

I was flying upstairs in business class from Frankfurt to Washington Dulles aboard Lufthansa’s beautiful 747-8. I had awakened from a very restful nap just in time to partake in the pre-arrival meal service.

There was no choice: “Mr. Klint, would you like soup and salad prior to arrival?” As a matter of fact, I would.

It was a simple meal: goulash soup with green salad, bread, and a small vanilla pudding for dessert. But it was perfect.

The Creole-style goulash featured paprika-spiced shrimp with a touch of sausage, onion, and garlic. The salad contained mixed green, artichoke, sun-dried tomatoes, and sunflower seeds.

a tray with food and drinks on it

a bowl of soup with shrimp and vegetables

a salad in a bowl

a pretzel and dessert on a tray

And perhaps the best part was a hot pretzel, directly form the oven. Add a little salted butter and you have a superb meal.

Even dessert, which I usually pass over, was small enough to justify. The chopped pistachio and tart cherry sauce proved an excellent combination with the vanilla pudding.

CONCLUSION

You are welcome to pity my simple American tastes, but this is one of the best pre-arrival meals I’ve had.

For a short Trans-Atlantic flight, I also think that a nice salad, soup, and dessert is perfect. But I think they need to do a better job presenting it. It looks like a meal that would be served for a short-haul flight.

That is typical Lufthansa crap served on board. I think author has never flown any airline outside USA before.

They must have redirected 95% of the catering budget away from Asia-Europe and given it to Europe -US, because the J food on BKK-FRA is a disgrace ( at least the 2 dishes I tried, appetiser of prawns and the cheese plate. Abysmal fail. )
And the seat on the 380 is woeful: claustrophobic, zero privacy, far too narrow, no bedding ( for a 13 hour flight). Dreadful airline.

I HATE the soup concept that LH introduces as their pre-arrival snack a couple of years ago! Why? I’ve NEVER had a soup that’s actually warm (or God forbid hot)! Cold meat based soups are horrible and LH seems to have problems heating the soup and getting it to pax at anything more than room temperature. All in all I think LH catering has gotten almost as bad as BA…and that’s coming from someone that’s been flying in LH Business Class between the US and FRA for over 25 years. There’s a definitely a reason I fly SQ on the JFK-FRA route more and more.
