Lufthansa, through its PrivatAir partner, will begin service from Munich to Baghdad four times a week this fall.
The flights will utilize a Boeing 737 and compliment service to Arbil (in Northern Iraq) from Frankfurt and from Vienna (on LH subsidiary Austrian Air).
Lufthansa served Baghdad from 1956-1990, but pulled out during the first Gulf War and has not returned since. With a growing economy and more stable political situation in Iraq, LH hopes to capitalize on a relatively untapped market.
Details here.
I hope to visit Arbil sometime next year on Austrian Air, but Baghdad sounds more alluring. Nevertheless, I’d be a fool to fly into Baghdad unless it was for official business.
