I was sorting through some old pictures today and stumbled upon a series of photos of United Airlines’ former Bangkok city ticket office. United pulled out of Bangkok in March after decades of service to Thailand and left behind, among other things, a dedicated staff of employees at one of the few remaining United city ticketing offices.
My visit was in 2011 and I did not have any specific business to sort in the office: being the aviation nut that I am, I was just so surprised to still see an actual airport ticketing office from United that I felt it necessary to visit.
Turns out I wasn’t the only one–the staff was very friendly and mentioned that people like me “visited” all the time. After my rough up over the King, this was probably my favorite tourist attraction in Bangkok…
Those were the days…
I recall that office fondly. As a Primier EXec and 1k, i received fantasic service and was able to make chnages and ensure veg meals at the last minute several times. Great service. So much so that I once took over a batch of treats on my way out of town. Sad that COdbaUA has dropped service to such an important city.
Ha, wow. It’s like going back in time. (Good Time)
could you give me the link to your Bangkok trip report ? thanks
And before they moved to that ticket office they were in a much nicer and bigger office in a different building for many years. This office was a major downgrade from the previous office.
@choi: I never wrote a trip report for this trip – I wish I had and maybe one day I will though it’s a bit out of date now. That trip included Park Hyatt hotels in Saigon, Shanghai, and Beijing, Le Meridein in Bangkok, two flights in Lufthansa First, one in Lufthansa Business, one in Qatar Economy, one in Turkish Business, one in Turkish First, one in Swiss First, one in Swiss Business, one in Thai First, and two in United First…
I think it will go down as a mistake for UA to have cancelled service to BKK on its own metal. I don’t think the NH JV will retain most of the customers, and many will select an alternate carrier entirely. BKK is such an important regional destination. It’s really disappointing that they cut the route.
No TR or story to go along with the run in about insulting the King (inadvertently)?
Was curious to read!
Yeah, i wanted to read about your insulting the King too. where the unitedstates HELL, is our bloody trip report!?!!??! get WRITING MATTHEW. THATS THE POINT OF A BLOG, NO!? ITS TO WRITE! NOT TO SAY ‘ITS CUMMING’ & never U.S. deliver!!! aaah!!!!
Why did United pull out of this route? A million Americans travel to Thailand every year so there couldn’t have been any shortage of passengers. They probably pulled out for political reasons, because it was becoming clear in Mar 2014 that the US aligned proxies were about to lose and the army was about to call a coup (which happened 2 months later). This decision was therefore definitely politically based. Even 5 years later, United still hasn’t returned to Thailand.
