California fully re-opens today, with capacity restrictions lifted and mask requirements relaxed. To celebrate, United Airlines is offering free snack boxes on intra-California flights.

Free Snack Box Today On United Airlines Intra-California Flights

It has been a long road to reach this point, but with the majority of Californians now vaccinated and new COVID-19 case numbers plummeting, California has fully re-opened. Among the highlights:

  • No face masks for vaccinated residents in most settings
    • Masks sill required on public transportation, in hospitals and jails, and at child care centers and K-12 schools
  • No capacity indoor or outdoor capacity limits
  • No social distancing

Airports and airplanes fall under federal law, where a mask mandate remains in effect.

California Governor Gavin Newsom did warn that the lifting of restrictions does not signal the end of the virus:

“We’re not done. This is not spiking the football tomorrow. It’s not mission accomplished tomorrow. This virus is not going away tomorrow. This pandemic is not behind us tomorrow. We’re very mindful that already in 2021 globally more people have lost their lives to Covid than the entire year 2020.”

To celebrate California’s full re-opening, United Airlines is offering each passenger a complimentary “recline” snack box on 14 intra-California flights today.

The “recline” snack box is described as “movie theater-themed snacks, including popcorn, pretzels, cookies and more” and includes:

  • Pirate’s Booty white cheddar puff snacks
  • Honey mustard pretzels
  • Gummy bears
  • Oreo cookies

In addition, United will be hosting trivia games at the gate with the opportunity for passengers to win bonus miles or United Club day passes. If you’re flying on one of United’s intra-California flights today, head to the gate early!

Select flights on the following routes will receive the free snack box today:

  • Los Angeles (LAX) ⇄ Sacramento (SMF)
  • Los Angeles (LAX) ⇄ San Diego (SAN)
  • San Francisco (SFO) ⇄ Los Angeles (LAX)
  • San Francisco (SFO) ⇄ Orange County (SNA)
  • San Francisco (SFO)  ⇄ San Diego (SAN)

CONCLUSION

Be on the look out for gate festivities and free snack boxes today. As a Californian, I am so happy to shed my mask and take another step toward fully embracing our “normal.”

I wouldn’t get rid of the mask yet, I haven’t seen a single store that isn’t still requiring a mask to enter (which is the only place I was wearing a mask anyway)…so nothing really changed today except the PR of saying the state is open, and Disneyland allowing no masks.

Places will slowly adjust. Here in Austin, which should not be compared to the rest of Texas, it took a few weeks for things to loosen up. There are a few businesses that enforce mask wearing judiciously still, but I’d say even the most mask focused places have now relented.

All that being said, for those who prefer to continue to mask, there’s certainly no stigma, and mask wearing continues to be common.

Scott … are you afraid ? Have you been vaccinated and still afraid ? It is so sad to see this but I repeat every persons right to “protect” themselves as they see fit.

Huh? What am I afraid of? I am not telling anyone to keep a mask to protect themself, I’m just saying that no places I’ve seen in CA have actually stopped requiring masks. I don’t wear a mask unless a business requires it and that’s just to follow the rules in the business and has nothing to do with being afraid. I feel like you only read my first few words and ignored the rest, so you probably aren’t reading this either.

Well, this can’t be putting United out all that much, given their paltry (read: lame) intra-California flight schedule. 🙁

Are AFA flight attendants serving these or are they bringing along a couple of interns from the office for each flight to hand these out?
