Is Now The Time To Buy Aeroplan Miles? (80% Bonus)

Aeroplan miles are on sale (again), this time with an 80% bonus if you buy at least 60,000 miles. That works out to about 1.3 cents each. Is now the time to buy miles?

Aeroplan Miles On Sale – 80% Bonus – Is Now The Time To Buy?

While I do miss the old Aeroplan program, there is a lot to like about the new program…a discussion you can check out here.

Through July 30, 2021, Aeroplan is selling miles with a bonus of up to 80%:

  • 3,000-24,000 miles – 50% bonus
  • 25,000-55,000 miles – 65% bonus
  • 60,000-350,000 miles – 80% bonus

That works out to 1.3 cents per mile with the 80% bonus. While not as lucrative as some past promotions, it is still a very good buy if you are ready to book travel and your plans are flexible.

We’ve noticed that airlines have really tightened the belt lately in release award space. Whether nearer in or further out (but especially further out), we are not seeing the “saver” space we saw as recently as earlier this month.

With travel demand surging in North America and Europe, that is not exactly surprising. Still, it is a cautionary tale that award space can be here today, gone tomorrow. In the world of miles and points, feasts become famines very quickly.

The good news is there still is quite a bit of last-minute space. The bad news you cannot rely on it on a specific date, like the last few months. Plus, planning a trip for this autumn or even next spring is much more difficult now than before, as airlines hold back space in hopes of full flights.

My advice has not changed: buy miles if you have a trip in which you can confirm the space immediately or if your travel is within the next few months and you are flexible.

But even at 1.3 cents per point, I would not stock up on hundreds of thousands of points. While I hope Aeroplan will let us know before any changes to the award chart take place, that’s not a risk I am willing to take (especially with Air Canada and its ongoing refund issues).

CONCLUSION

Is now the time to buy Aeroplan points? It depends upon your circumstances. Certainly the sale is not so lucrative that you’d be a fool not to buy. On the contrary, the sale is very good but exercising caution is always prudent. Don’t buy unless you are ready to book travel.

Will you be taking part in the latest Aeroplan purchased miles promotion?
