I Need Your Help Dealing with a Facebook Impostor!

Matthew Klint Posted onJanuary 10, 2011 4 Comments

This evening I received a text message from a friend saying, "You might want to check your Facebook page…" I texted back that it must be some other person, because I have no Facebook page. She texted back, stating, "Uhhhh that’s creepy. It was your pic with interests of everything about flying!!!"

Now I was concerned. I was sitting at the dinner table with my brother and handed him my iPhone and said, "Please login and see if I have a Facebook profile." Sure enough, we found a particularly unflattering picture of me along with interests including Oprah, airlines, and men. While I do like airlines, I’ve never been a fan of Oprah and while most of my friends are men, I am not interested in men.

I have no idea who created this page or why someone would do this, but I have been forced to create a genuine Facebook page of my own. For years, I have resisted Facebook as an intrusion on my privacy and not worth the time or effort to setup and maintain. But I did not see another alternative.

So if I may ask two favors, dear readers:

First, here is the fake Facebook page. Would you mind logging into your Facebook accounts and clicking on Report/Block This Person? I want this fake page down by the end of the day. It shocks me that it was created two months ago and I just found out about it today.

Second, here is my real Facebook page. Would you like to be my friend? I’ll be updating my profile and adding pictures later in the week.

Thanks for your help. Does the wiseguy who set up the fake account care to fess up?

This is unfortunately the sad part of being a somewhat high profile figure. You might also want to set up a fan page, just to get it locked down to prevent someone from impersonating you there too.

Eww, sorry to see that. Creepy factor eleven! Like you had done previously, I avoid Facebook, but just launched myself on Twitter for my blog purposes… it seems a bit less invasive.

That is horrible, I reported it as fake profile / Impersonating me or someone I know / You real facebook name. I did not want to choose public figure/personality because I think real name is better.

I hope this fake one get’s deleted soon.
