Star Alliance Celebrates 15 Years

star_alliance_15_years Happy 15th Anniversary to Star Alliance!

What began at a small office near Los Angeles International Airport in 1997 as a union between five airlines hoping to better cooperate has become a global force to be reckoned with; the leading alliance with 27 airlines from around the world.

Stop and think for a moment what Star Alliance’s pioneering work has meant for travelers like you and me. Reciprocal frequent flyer benefits including lounge access, upgrades, and award redemptions has exponentially increased the value of our miles and allowed for the exploration of just about anywhere in the world.

Former United Airlines Senior VP and current Star Alliance CEO Mark Schwab released this letter today:

This year we celebrate our 15th Anniversary.

Having grown from just five airlines in 1997, we couldn’t be more proud to now offer our services across more member airlines than any other network in the world.

As our member airlines have expanded, so has the number of frequent flyers who choose to fly with us. We now serve 600 million passengers, helping you travel more seamlessly between over 1290 destinations and across more recognised airlines than any other network.

The Star Alliance network offers the very best frequent flyer benefits so travellers can count on lounge access and priority treatment across all our member airlines. Plus, it’s never been easier to earn and burn miles on just one card.

On behalf of all its Member Airlines, I’d like to extend a big thank you for your custom and Alliance loyalty.

You’ve earned it.

Mark Schwab

CEO Star Alliance Services GmbH

As my regular readers know, I have worked for Star Alliance before and hope to do so again in the future. From a personal perspective, not only has Star opened up countless travel opportunities, but it has provided me a tremendous opportunity to learn more about the industry and a wonderful work environment. I got to know each and every person in the small, family-style company and consider everyone a friend. As much as I love working for myself, there was just something special about being part of that team.

Again, Happy 15th Annivesary Star Alliance!
