United Airlines Launches Spring Break “Pi Day” Sale

Happy π Day! To commemorate this day of mathematics, United is launching a flash sale to spring break destinations.

United Airlines Pi Day Sale

Pi (π ) is the ratio of the circumference of any circle to the diameter of that circle. It is a constant number (3.14159265359). For more history or explanation see here…I’m not a math guy.

I am a travel guy, though, and note that United is running a special pi sale, with fares starting at $31.40 or 3,140 miles (plus $5.60 in taxes)

  • Fares are for one-way domestic U.S. travel (some conditions apply) on basic economy
  • Valid for travel from March 28, 2021 to June 5, 2021
  • Fares may not be available on every flight
  • Full list of cities can be found here (it’s a long one…)

Do note that if you are choosing between 3,140 miles plus $5.60 or $31.40, please just pay the $31.40 unless your travel plans are really up in the air. Using miles means you’re getting less than one cent per mile in value (debatably a bit more because award tickets will not book into Basic Economy class). If your miles are worth that little, it’s time to use a cash-back credit card instead.

Note that all tickets right now, even Basic Economy, carry no change fees. After March 31, 2021, Basic Economy tickets will no longer be changeable (unless United extends the waiver further), but you’re fine during this sale period. Remember that Basic Economy tickets do not include seat selection, guaranteed group or family seating, and full-sized carry-on items.

CONCLUSION

United quips, “Unlike pi, this sale won’t keep going.” The sale ends tomorrow, so this deal won’t go on very long indeed.

Will you take advantage of this promo from United?

It is not a slam dunk comparison.

With 3,140 miles, you can cancel for free (not travel voucher), and with 3,140 miles, you can pick a seat and regular economy.

For $31.40 it is basic economy and can only cancel for a voucher.

Please do a fair side-by-side comparison.

Who would love to use a “ cash back credit car “ I think you meant card. Novel idea though lol.
