Happy Independence Day to all my American readers!

United CEO Oscar Munoz sent the following note to United workers yesterday evening. Thanks to a FA friend for sharing it with me:

Dear United family,

I want to thank all of you for the incredible work you’ve done to make this a successful summer travel season so far, the busiest in the history of United States airlines. Now, we are headed into the second half of this marathon and I know all of us want to finish strong, taking care of our customers and one another.

Even as we stay focused on the job, while we observe Independence Day in the United States, we should remember the privileged role we play as ambassadors for the values to which this day is dedicated, that unite us all in shared purpose, no matter where we come from.

One value stands out above all as central to our shared purpose of connecting people and uniting the world: We are dedicated to the truth that everyone is created equal.

This past weekend, I joined members of our team in Seattle to experience a profound illustration of that fundamental value of equality and dignity.

We visited SEA to welcome Special Olympics athletes as they arrived for the 2018 USA Games.

As a United family, we share with Special Olympics a determination to help open a world of possibilities to all people – to choose to include. I also look forward to United’s participation at ceremonies commemorating the 50th anniversary of Special Olympics this month at Soldier Field in Chicago. It will be a fitting celebration of our long-standing partnership with this movement, which is dedicated to the eternal truths of human equality, dignity and rights that this holiday represents.

Thank you for your hard work this week and throughout this historic summer for our airline. Keep safe; keep United.

Gratefully,

Oscar

His message last year seemed more fitting for Memorial Day than the Fourth. This year I think he strikes a delicate balance. If I’m reading between the lines, when Munoz speaks of American values of equality he is speaking about the childhood separation issue, which he took a very public stand on.

Have a wonderful day with family and friends–take a moment to watch this as well:
