German Airline. Scandinavian Route. Italian Dinner.

For this week’s Meal of the Week I focus on an Italian meal on a German airline on a Scandinavian route.

I was flying from Stockholm to Munich on Lufthansa around dinnertime, with a flight time of two hours.

While Lufthansa Business Class within Europe is simply a blocked middle seat toward the front of the aircraft, a decent meal is included on most flights. Flights roughly two hours or more feature a hot meal, which includes an appetizer, small hot plate, bread and dessert.

After takeoff the FA asked me if I wanted dinner, stating that pumpkin ravioli would be served. No other choice was given.

The ravioli came in a creamy tomato sauce with sage sprinkled on top. Although it looks messy, the ravioli was very delicious.

Lufthansa generally offers superb bread and this flight was no different. One roll was topped with cheese and sunflower seeds while the second was sourdough.

But I need your help with the starter. The yellow vegetable was cauliflower, but I cannot pinpoint what the other things were on the dish. The stuff that looks like hummus was not hummus. That white thing with the brown sprinkles tasted like an Asian Pear (half pear, half apple). But that’s just a guess. In any case, a very odd combo.

Dessert was a layered cake with a tart cherry jelly-like topping and a side of raisins.

CONCLUSION

I enjoyed the ravioli very much–Lufthansa always seems to do pasta well. Too bad, like a proper Italian dinner, the ravioli was not followed by a delicious meat course. Still a good meal…

    The white vegetable sure looks like a cooked taro root, though the flavor you describe is off. Can’t help you with that hummus looking thing, though.

    Was the scoop of white stuff perhaps a rice salad? Germans and Swiss eat rice salad the way we eat potato salad. I had it as a side on a recent LX J flight and it was yummy.
