Which New International Routes Will American Airlines Announce?

Matthew Klint Posted onAugust 16, 2023August 17, 2023 19 Comments

I love a good game and American Airlines has teased us with a number of clues ahead of announcing a quartet of new international routes tomorrow.

American Airlines Teases New 2024 International Routes

In a move that copies what United has done for a couple years now, American Airlines has released a tantalizing teaser on social media with “clues” concerning the new routes:

@IshrionA notes there are five boarding passes in the video above, offering five clues:

  • American will fly from DFW to “somewhere hot”
  • American will fly from PHL to “somewhere fun”
  • American will fly from PHL to “somewhere new”
  • American will fly from PHL to “somewhere glitzy”
  • American will fly from ORD to “somewhere classic”

Others like One Mile At A Time and View From The Wing have offered their guesses. Here are mine:

  • Finnair already has a DFW-HEL flight, so I am not sure that AA will add a flight of its own to somewhere “hot” as…well, you get it. I think the “hot” destination is Barcelona (BCN), which would augment AA’s Spain service from DFW to Madrid.
  • The somewhere “fun” destination from Philadelphia (PHL) will be Tokyo (probably HND over NRT). Travel to Japan has rebounded and this will be a test to see if AA can be profitable on transpacific service from PHL.
  • AA announced service from Philadelphia to Casablanca (CMN) before the pandemic, but never started it. I think this will be the “new” destination from Philadelphia. But it could just as easily be Doha (DOH).
  • There’s a French flag in the video and I think the “glitzy” destination is PHL to Nice (NCE).
  • There’s also a Swiss flag in the video and I tend to think the “classic” route will be Chicago (ORD) to Zurich (ZRH). This route has performed well for United (though to be clear, I would think AA might try to bring it back from New York JFK first, though).

We will find out tomorrow – let us know your guess in the comment section below!

DFW – SIN is hot. If not SIN then BCN but BCN isn’t hot.
    PHL – CMN
    PHL – BER
    PHL – NCE or GVA
    ORD – MAD

You ever been to BCN in August? 😉

I don’t think AA has a plane capable of reaching DFW to SIN. Also, can you imagine a flight like that for the people in Y.

I used to fly to SIN a lot in business class. That was a flight that I never cared about miles and status and only booked in either Cathay or Singapore. There is no US airline that will get me on their planes with their services for that long.

PHL has a Muslim in the video so odds are it’s somewhere he would be flying home.

And I’d be checking what’s on that laptop after the arrest in Philadelphia this week involving Al-Qaeda. But I’m just paranoid when it comes to this stuff after 9/11.

      He’s a sihk not a Muslim.
If you knew a thing about sikhs you would laugh at calling him a Muslim.

It was actually Casablanca that AA had announced prior to the pandemic, and I bet you are right that they will do this. I hope you are right about Zurich, too!

AA never announced selective to Marrakech. They announced service to Casablanca. It’s close, but it’s not Marrakech. They’re different cities.

When you make an obvious mistake I’ll point it out. You’ve indicated you’re receptive to that.

Do point out mistakes. Don’t make it seem like I have no idea there is a difference between the two cities when I’ve written trip reports about both places. Big difference.

AA is making hay with the shift from domestic to foreign travel. However, I suspect several of these will fall to the wayside after the summer rush. Not enough volume to justify the cost and diversion of equipment.

Delta is pulling out of Gatwick after only several months. I think DL started this service as a reaction to B6 service from BOS & JFK to LGW. I suspect there’s insufficient “business” PAX to pay for the flight. Also, VS has this route covered as well, so DL can easily handoff those cashing in miles.

Look for several others to curtail coverage once the summer is over.

These are seasonal routes – for the summer only.
